As a landscape artist I draw inspiration from the rhythms, shapes and structures to be found in rural and urban settings. But what interests me most is the process of making a piece of work, exploring what happens when specific mediums, principally ink, charcoal and acrylic, are applied to paper, board or canvas. I work quickly across the work surface using a variety of marks and washes of ink or paint, trying to capture a particular mood or atmosphere, or a striking feature in the landscape. It might be a stone dyke or tree, the play of light, a shift in the season or maybe the huge volume of space between land, sea and sky.
I draw my subject matter from the Scottish coastline, east and west, the hills and woodlands of Perthshire, and the streets, closes and open spaces of Edinburgh.
