I have continued to work in the Dunkeld area of Perthshire, including a commission to do some paintings in Lagganallachie to the west.

Living in Edinburgh I am constantly on the lookout for likely subjects, most recently the trees in the Meadows near where I live.

I turn again and again to working in ink and charcoal, two mediums I have always loved. It has something to do with their raw, no-nonsense qualities, putting a primacy on the basic skill of drawing. Earlier last year I completed a large drawing in Gleneagles using India ink and white acrylic.

Just occasionally I try to go beyond my comfort zone and in January 2020 completed a course in a new medium for me, stone lithography. It was physically demanding, lumbering a great heavy slab of limestone from one work table to another as I carried out the various litho processes – initially drawing on the limestone, washing the stone with acid, mixing and applying the ink, and then working on the presses. As always what I enjoyed most was the drawing bit. The rest of the process was interesting but maybe a little too fastidious and exacting. I like to work quickly and spontaneously so probably lack patience!
